WAITING IT OUT

We are waiting for a weather window to open up to allow us to round Cape Mendacino and make the run into San Francisco Bay.  The weather is supposed to open up on Thursday, leaving us trying to find things to do in Crescent City while we wait it out.  One of those things was setting up Chris' fishing pole.  We bought the pole and the other items we needed for a lure for Dorado etc.

NEWPORT TO CRESCENT CITY

After some nice sailing at night, we arrived in Crescent City in thick fog.  We were having cartography issues on our chartplotter and other sailboats had other issues.  One in particular lost radar.  So we all got together and followed each other into the harbour.  Happy to report everyone made it safely in.

WHERE WE ARE

Since our last post, we crossed over to Port Angeles with much reduced winds and stayed there for a day.  We then sailed up to Neah Bay and anchored in the bay waiting for  a weather window to proceed south to Newport. Fog was the main experience and for the first time since we bought the boat, we were routinely sailing with radar on.

HIGH WINDS AND GOOD JUDGEMENT

We set out across the Strait of Georgia and sailed to Sidney.  We were joined by two friends and the next day set off for Port Angeles.  Smoky sky in the morning and light winds that changed as we sailed into the

Better weather broke on August 17th and we sailed across to Port Angeles.  We checked in via the ROAM app, and received a cruising permit as well.  It was a non- event checking into the US.

LEG 1 - HOME PORT TO SIDNEY BC

Motored down the Fraser River and out into the Strait of Georgia.  The wind picked up to 12 kts, then 15, then 20.  It stayed between 15 and 24 knots for the rest of the crossing which we were doing at 7 knots.  We then went through Porlier Pass at a brisk 12 knots running with the tide.

AERIAL VIEWS

We invested in a DJI Mini 2 to aid in recording our adventures.  Chris will do the flying.  This drone is one gram below the threshold for registration  here in Canada.

WEATHER AND ROUTING

We are being coached by Jamie and Behan Gifford of Totem.  They are a fantastic couple who completed a circumnavigation with their three children.  We look forward to their weather routing and advice as we head south.  Here is a still from our computer screen showing the routing and weather as it appears today.
