In Memoriam: Arthur Farrari - 1948-2011

We read about the turmoil in the world and if we take a moment to think, we might have a glimmer of the pain that upheaval and the loss of loved ones inflicts upon so many people around the world. Occasionally – even in peaceful Canada –sometimes an event makes us feel that it comes close to home. In this instance, it is an event – a loss – that is keenly felt, for today, the earth is not as rich and wonderful a place as it had been a few days ago.

I speak of the loss of a person: a friend, and a professional that I know was universally loved by his family, clients, colleagues and friends. In my profession – one that all too often seems to be a cut throat business dominated by selfishness, ruthlessness and ego – Arthur Ferrari was a gentlemen and friend to all. He conducted himself and his practice with respect for all those around him, with a high ethical standard, with a warm humour, a splendid wit and a genuine concern for the people in his community and for those with whom he worked.

Art grew up in Lethbridge and returned to Lethbridge after studying Architecture at UBC. Once back home, he became part of the oldest continuing architectural practice in Alberta. In business since 1929, Ferrari, Westwood Babits is its latest manifestation and Art took careful measures to ensure that he shared his good fortune in the Lethbridge community and planned the firm’s succession by embracing the talents of younger colleagues who could carry on the good work and community participation and support that the firm is known for.

Art was larger than life. His loss is truly felt and we are not as whole as a people as when he was with us. The profession he loved is much the poorer for his loss.

Art, we know where you are and we you could only be adding to the joy in Heaven.
